10 Breathtaking Places to Visit Before They’re Gone

The world is full of stunning destinations, but some of them are disappearing faster than we’d like. Whether due to climate change, rising sea levels, or human activity, these incredible places may not be around forever. If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing them, now’s the time to start planning your trip.
1. The Great Barrier Reef, Australia
One of the world’s most famous natural wonders, the Great Barrier Reef is home to vibrant coral, marine life, and stunning underwater scenery. But climate change and coral bleaching are taking a toll, threatening its very existence. Snorkelling or diving here is a must for nature lovers.

2. Venice, Italy
The “Floating City” is slowly sinking, and with rising sea levels, experts predict Venice could be uninhabitable by the end of the century. Gondola rides through the canals, St. Mark’s Basilica, and hidden alleyways make this city a dream destination while it’s still above water.

3. The Maldives
This tropical paradise of white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters is at risk of disappearing due to rising sea levels. The Maldives is the lowest-lying country in the world, and scientists warn that much of it could be underwater within the next century.

4. The Amazon Rainforest, South America
Known as the “lungs of the Earth,” the Amazon is rapidly shrinking due to deforestation and wildfires. Visiting the rainforest offers a chance to witness unparalleled biodiversity, indigenous cultures, and breathtaking landscapes—while we still can.

5. Glacier National Park, USA
Once home to 150 glaciers, this Montana park now has fewer than 25, and they continue to melt at an alarming rate. Hiking through Glacier National Park lets you see its spectacular lakes, mountains, and wildlife, but the glaciers themselves may soon be gone.

6. The Dead Sea, Jordan & Israel
Famous for its high salt content that lets visitors float effortlessly, the Dead Sea is shrinking by about three feet per year due to water diversion from the Jordan River. If you’ve ever wanted to experience this natural wonder, don’t wait too long.

7. Machu Picchu, Peru
The ancient Incan city perched high in the Andes is one of the most iconic sites in the world, but increasing tourist traffic and natural erosion put it at risk. While there are preservation efforts in place, the site’s long-term future remains uncertain.

8. Madagascar’s Unique Forests
Madagascar is home to some of the world’s most unique wildlife, including lemurs and the bizarre-looking baobab trees. But deforestation and habitat destruction are threatening this ecological wonder, making it an urgent destination for eco-travellers.

9. Patagonia’s Glaciers, Argentina & Chile
With dramatic mountains, glaciers, and fjords, Patagonia is one of the most awe-inspiring regions on Earth. However, climate change is rapidly melting its glaciers, meaning some of its most stunning landscapes could look very different in the near future.

10. The Galápagos Islands, Ecuador
Famous for inspiring Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, the Galápagos Islands are home to rare wildlife found nowhere else on Earth. However, rising tourism and environmental changes threaten the delicate ecosystem, making responsible travel essential.

Our very own Erin Kemp, co-owner of Kemp Travel, is featured in the January print edition of Travel Courier in their Ask the Agent monthly feature! In the interview, Erin shares the latest travel trends and insider insights. Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or planning your first big adventure, Erin’s advice is a must-read!
Q: A new year is here! What are some of the key trends for the year ahead?
EK: One notable trend we’ve observed over the past few years—and one I believe is here to stay—is the rise of multi-generational travel. More grandparents are choosing to take the entire family on trips rather than buying traditional gifts. It’s a shift towards creating shared experiences and memories vs tangible goods.
Another trend that we’ve noticed is Baby Boomers embracing the “spend the kids’ inheritance” mentality. More and more often we are hearing comments like, “Let’s go for it; it’s only our kids’ money” and “We’ve earned it and we’re enjoying it.” Older Boomers, particularly those with financially independent children, are more willing to book higher-priced, longer-duration trips knowing their children are already set. The prevailing sentiment is, “We need to do it now before we can’t.” It is an exciting shift in the travel industry, focusing on meaningful, experience-driven adventures and a willingness to invest in those moments.

Q: What’s popular when it comes to Europe?
EK: Italy remains our top European destination, but we’ve noticed a significant rise in interest for travel to the UK, particularly England and Wales. River and Mediterranean Ocean cruises also continue to be popular options, offering an excellent way to explore multiple destinations in a single journey while only unpacking once.
Additionally, there’s a growing demand for off-the-beaten-path experiences. While Italy is still a favorite, clients are now seeking unique and less conventional destinations within the country—beyond the classic spots like Rome, Venice, and Florence—to uncover hidden gems, smaller crowds and more authentic cultural experiences.
Q: Are there any lesser-known destinations that you think are on the rise amongst Canadians?
EK: While Colombia may not be a lesser-known destination, it has recently gained traction after years of being less popular.
Travellers are increasingly seeking unique destinations within the Caribbean and Central America region. They’ve experienced all-inclusive resorts but still crave a sunny winter getaway with a fresh and distinctive appeal.

Q: Do you think the already launched UK ETA visa and the upcoming ETIAS will impact bookings?
EK: No, I really don’t think it will impact bookings. So many destinations already require an ETA or visa, and we streamline the process for our clients by assisting with applications to ensure they have everything they need in place.

Q: What’s the longest trip you’ve ever booked?
EK: The longest trip I’ve personally booked was an incredible 200-day journey, combining an 80-day Grand Voyage followed by a 120-day World Cruise. For land-based travel, the longest journey I’ve booked was around 60 days, where my clients travelled from Cape Town to Cairo with an extension to Jordan!
