KTG Agent Spotlight: Sheila’s Journey Through the Heart of Colombia

Sunrises in San Juan, Dreams in the Dominican

In February, I was fortunate to travel to Colombia, escorting a small group of clients on the AmaWaterways river cruise “The Magic of Colombia,” with a three-day pre-cruise stay in Medellín and two days post-cruise in Cartagena.

Medellín is a city with a complicated past, once known for extreme violence, yet today that history feels far removed. The transformation is remarkable — the people are exceptionally friendly, proud of their country, and thrilled to welcome visitors once again. The cityscape is incredibly diverse, ranging from hillside brick homes to modern, luxurious residences. We stayed at Hotel El Cielo, a beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of the metropolitan area, providing the perfect base to explore. Walking through Medellín’s lively neighbourhoods offered fascinating insights into local life, and our drum lesson was a particularly memorable cultural experience.

Sailing aboard AmaMelodia was a highlight of the trip. The ship, accommodating just 62 passengers, offers a calm, intimate atmosphere ideal for relaxing and connecting with fellow travellers. A defining feature is that the majority of the onboard staff are Colombian, and their pride and warmth are evident in every interaction. From dining to excursions, they go out of their way to make the cruise experience personal and memorable, offering insider tips, sharing stories, and ensuring every moment feels special.

The Magdalena River itself is peaceful and largely uninhabited. Villages along the banks provide charming glimpses of local life, with residents waving enthusiastically as you pass. Shore excursions are culturally rich and authentically Colombian: visiting colourful villages, where artisans provided an opportunity for us to craft our own intricate filigree jewellery; tuk-tuk rides through historic streets; speedboat trips to explore tributaries and observe traditional fishing; and exceptional birdwatching in a country that boasts over 2,000 recorded species.

Our post-cruise stay in Cartagena was equally captivating. We stayed at Casa San Agustin, a boutique hotel nestled in the heart of the walled city, where it is safe and delightful to wander the streets at any hour. Getsemaní, another section of the city, is a must-see with its vibrant, colourful streets and lively atmosphere. Cartagena’s mix of history, architecture, and Caribbean energy makes it the perfect conclusion to the journey. One of the highlights was our tour of the city in vintage vehicles while sipping champagne.

I would highly recommend this itinerary — the combination of Medellín, the intimate river cruise, and Cartagena — for travellers seeking diverse cultural experiences, historical exploration, and a relaxing yet immersive atmosphere. Colombia offers something for every type of traveller: from those seeking Cartagena’s vibrant nightlife and beaches to countryside lovers, history buffs, and nature enthusiasts, especially birdwatchers. This trip truly allows you to connect with the Colombian people and experience the country in an authentic, meaningful way.
